Your heart is not the compass that God steers by.

-Samuel Rutherford (1600-1664)

Just felt like posting that quote.

That’s all!

***Planetmitchell email has taken leave of absence

It appears that my planetmitchell email addresses have gone away for the time being. My husband is working on the problem when he has time, but right now he is too busy to do a thing. If anyone needs to reach me please contact me via oboe@earthlink.net.

Thanks!

***UPDATE!!

The planet is back. Feel free to use the regular address now.

***Symphony

I had a rehearsal for Symphony tonight. It felt good to give an A-440. To play with my friends. To hear music. Yay!

***Potter Passion

I just dropped Kelsey off at a Barnes & Noble store so that she can hang out for nearly two hours. At midnight she’ll get to stand in what is sure to be a horrendously long line to purchase her copy of the new Harry Potter book. I’ve read the other books, and I’ve enjoyed them. But I’m not willing to spend this amount of time in line … and especially when it’s far past my bedtime!

It does remind me, though, of the lines Dan and I stood in “back in the day” (why is that so popular for kids to say right now?). Star Wars. Star Trek. We stood in incredibly long lines, to be sure. The line was part of the fun, in fact. So I do understand Kelsey’s desire to do this, even while I know it’s nutty!

I plan on borrowing her book when she’s done. But I’m sure she’ll be Potter Possessed for a while.

***Not Exactly…

The Willow Glen Resident printed their correction in the paper this week. I was pleased to see that they cared enough to do that, but they still didn’t get it right! They wrote:

In the story about the Willow Glen residents from Lincoln High School whose work is on display in the Downtown Doors program in the Fairmont Plaza which ran in the June 4 issue of the Willow Glen Resident Patty Mitchell was misquoted. The quote should have read: “We are, I suppose (and hope!), the support behind the artist, and we certainly encourage, but I’ve never have, nor wanted, to push.”

(Repeat after me: Lengthy sentences are tastier with commas!)

Well, that was not my original quote! It is close to the response I emailed to them regarding their incorrect quote from the article they printed on June 4th. It’s fairly clear, really, that the quote above is a response. I have no idea what that orignial reporter wrote down on his little pad, but I can guarantee it wasn’t the quote above, nor was it the quote from the earlier article. I recall commenting on Dan’s and my involvement in music, having absolutely no artistic (visual, that is) talent, providing Kelsey with art supplies, and that I had seen her talent even before she started kindergarten. Then he spoke to Dan about teaching music at De Anza.

The above “quote” has a typo as well (“but I’ve never have”…?!), which makes me look like a very poor writer. I saved the original email to the paper and here is the main body of the letter:

As much as I appreciate the article about the Downtown Doors project, and as proud as I am of our daughter, Kelsey, I feel I must respond. Never did I say the words that were quoted as mine in the article! The writer put words in quotes, indicating that I said “We’re the push behind the inspiration.”

I never said that. Nor is it true. We are, I suppose (and hope!), the support behind the artist, and we certainly encourage, but I’ve never had, nor wanted, to push.

Lincoln High School has much to be proud of. This group of four students, along with their teacher Eileen Zamora, is only one of many things about which to boast. I thank you for the article, but ask that writers be more cautious. Quoting should always be accurate.

So what is it with the media? Do they not care about truth, are they lazy, or do they honestly not understand? I wonder if people from these smaller papers went through journalism classes. I wonder if journalism classes focus on truth telling. Considering the larger papers that are having a tough time with truth, and considering our political leaders who can’t seem to distinguish between truth, wishes, ideas and lies, I suppose I shouldn’t be suprised. But I am dismayed. I don’t mean to sound harsh or bitter; I just think that truth matters!

Ah well. At least they tried. I’ll give them credit for that. I just hope someone reads this and realizes they still didn’t quite get it.

***Yay Kelsey!

Yesterday Kelsey participated in the Abraham Lincoln High School graduation ceremony. It is now official; she is a high school graduate! These past four years she’s done quite a bit, and Dan and I are proud of her. I know college will be wonderful, but I’m sure going to miss my girl.

Not only that … I’ll be outnumbered again! HELP! For three years now we’ve had two of each gender in this house. Prior to that, of course, Brandon was home so Kelsey and I were outnumbered but, even so, there were at least two in the Girl Camp. Now it will be one. Me. Alone. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

But back to Kelsey … here’s a picture of her with someone who loves her very much:

***Searching

It seems that often life is about searching. I don’t particularly like to search for certain things. Oh well.

My hairdresser died a few weeks ago. It was an unexpected heart attack. I was actually thinking about changing hairdressers, because sometimes his chatter was a bit annoying, and he was a bit of a huggie-kissy sort too and I don’t fit well with folks like that. But I hadn’t changed. And then he died. Very sad. (His death, not my having not changed.)

Prior to that hairdresser (and the word “hairdresser” even bugs me!) I slept with the guy who cut my hair. Really. He was a good haircutter for longer hair, which was what I had, and I really did like him a lot. He was very careful with how he cut it, and he made me feel very comfortable. He didn’t talk too much when he cut my hair, either. Well, okay, I didn’t just like him; I loved him. I still do; my husband used to cut my hair! (Did I have you worried for at least short time? Probably not. I’m pretty predictable, yes?) Dan just can’t cut my hair at this shorter length; it’s a bit more difficult to do.

So the search beings. UGH. What do I want?:
A haircutter (there, I like the word “haircutter” better) who doesn’t talk to much.
A haircutter who doesn’t make assumptions about my political, religious, or other views.
A haircutter who doesn’t take too long cutting this mop.
A haircutter who charges a reasonable amount.

Is that asking too much? I hope not. Time will tell.

Yosemite

These pictures are from our Yosemite trip on 6.15.03. We woke up early that Father’s Day (Dan getting up earlier than everyone else, of course!) and drove to the park. We first went to Bridal Veil falls, then Yosemite Falls, and then drove up to Glacier Point. The weather was perfect, and views spectacular!
